Secondary Teacher Education - Master's

Preparing Effective Secondary Teachers for Today’s Classrooms

The Secondary Education MAT at Southern Miss is a 30-credit, fully online alternate route program designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree who are ready to become a middle or high school teacher. While our program is online, we engage with our students live during virtual class meetings and in-person visits to schools where they complete their professional practice experiences. Program Structure

Total Credit Hours: 30 (10 courses)

  • Core Coursework: 8 courses
  • Professional Practice Experiences: 2 courses

Professional practice requires one full academic year of full-time classroom experience, one course a semester for the fall and spring.

Two Professional Practice Pathways Options

You choose which professional pathway is best for you!

Candidates are employed as the teacher of record in a Mississippi school district, earning a salary and benefits while completing program coursework.

Candidates participate in a mentor-supported, apprenticeship-style placement, gradually assuming instructional responsibility. Residency placements may include funding support through the Mississippi Center for Apprenticeships and Residency in Education (MCARE) and school district partnerships for grant-funded tuition, stipends and educational expenses.

Both pathways meet state licensure requirements and require full-time classroom experience for one academic school year (fall/spring).

Financial Support

Through the Mississippi Center for Apprenticeships and Residencies in Education (MCARE) at 91ÉÙÅ®¼¯ÖÐÓª, eligible residency candidates may receive tuition assistance and living stipends to help offset program costs.

Additional state and federal incentives are available for teachers serving in high-need subject areas and critical shortage regions across Mississippi. These incentives may include loan forgiveness, signing bonuses, relocation assistance, and housing support.
