Artificial Intelligence Taskforce Timeline

Spring 2023
  • AI Taskforce established by the Academic Integrity Director 
  • May 2023, added 鈥渦nauthorized use of artificial intelligence鈥 to the academic integrity violations list
   
Fall 2023
  • First version of syllabus language drafted as an option for faculty
  • Notice of increased reports for academic integrity due to unauthorized use of artificial intelligence.
  • USM Partnership with Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN) established.
   
Spring 2024
  • AI syllabus language required. Faculty select from three options.
  • The Center for Faculty Development offer workshops related to academic integrity and artificial intelligence. 
  • Began offering Intro to AI, Intro to Gen AI, Ethics of AI, and Cybersecurity and AI through MAIN partnership. Courses developed by Intel/Dell and USM offers digital badges for completion.
   
Summer 2024
  • Analysis of academic integrity reporting shows 104% increase in reports:
    • 53.9% of cases (331 of 613) due to unauthorized use of AI
    • 66.2% in GEC courses
    • 44 students received XF
   
Fall 2024
  • Office of the Provost hosts guest speaker, C. Edward Watson, author of Teaching with AI during Fall First Week. Events included keynote, discussion with academic administrators, and interactive workshop for 150 faculty who also received the book
  • Surveys collected on the needs for AI professional development and current knowledge of AI
  • 鈥淯sing AI (or Not Using AI) in the College Classroom鈥 workshop for student developed and offered in face-to-face and online. The content is also used by the Academic Integrity Director and the Associate Provost for Faculty Success in workshop. Content and examples were gathered from faculty across the institution. 
  • AI Taskforce consulted for additional professional development needs for faculty and staff
  • Proposal for Summer Grant for Improvement of Instruction includes a track for incorporating AI into courses
  • Center for Faculty Development presents "AI in Action" videos in their monthly newsletter
   
Spring 2025
  • MAIN AI Lab opened in Cook Library
  • Roll out of Coursera includes courses on AI and certificates
  • AI Taskforce helped identify needs for faculty professional development and updates to the AI syllabus statement options
  • The Center for Faculty Development hosted "AI Conversations: Ethics, Education, and Industry", including panels with faculty, students, guest speakers, and industry professionals.
   
Summer 2025
  • Analysis of academic integrity reports show a decrease in reports
    • 61% decrease is reported violations from AY 23-24 to AY 24-25   
    • Unauthorized use of AI decreased by 7.7pp 
    • Significant decrease in reported cases in GEC course. Decrease by 31.5pp to 34.7% 
  • Five of Nine awarded Summer Grants for Improvement of Instruction focused on incorporating AI into courses
  • New student orientation includes presentations on AI to students, and parents and families.
  • Governor Reeves announced the Mississippi AI Talent Accelerator and the award of $1.24 million to USM to develop Maritime AI Innovation Lab, and the establishment of a master鈥檚 degree program in Robotics and Intelligent Systems.
  • Discussion on AI embedded into orientation for new faculty, teaching assistants, and international students, and the cross-section for academic integrity
   
Fall 2025
  • AI Taskforce expanded with charge from President Paul
    • Recommendations to assure that all baccalaureate graduates have a fundamental understanding of how to utilize artificial intelligence/machine learning. 
    • Develop career readiness and workforce-relevant AI competencies with pathways or best practices on how faculty can help students develop specific applied AI skills
    • Recommendations for any infrastructure needs the university may need to develop to reach the above outcomes.
  • AI Taskforce will submit curricular recommendations by the end of the fall semester to allow for approval, development of courses, and implementation by fall 2026
  • The Center for Faculty Development will offer AI training for faculty with attention to incorporation into courses. 
  • Hands-on workshop with Open AI to be scheduled.   
  • Provost Nail launches pilot interdisciplinary course on AI. Faculty invited to apply to teach 3-week module to showcase their subject matter expertise 
   
Spring 2026
  • AI Taskforce will submit infrastructure and additional cross-institutional recommendations by the end of spring 2026, if not sooner.
